ML, I seem to remember you saying many times in the 9700 forums that Touch screen devices were "too girly for you". Why the sudden interest? Btw, the no contract price is $499USD plus tax (usually ~9%).
I would expect the 9780 to cost the same.
Does your carrier even use the same 3G bands? I have not looked at the spec to see what EU vs NA carriers are using but I would certainly look at that before getting a device to use on your home network since I doubt you would be happy with EDGE.
