I realize that leaving memory cleaning turned on uses up CPU cycles but does encryption also use up the battery if you are just protecting the media card?

    simply put, no.

encryption is not a service that is constantly running protecting the media card. it is only used when wiriting information to the card or reading information from the card.

so, there should be no concerns about battery use with encryption.
