I don't understand how that would make any sense but being that this is the first blackberry that I have had with wi-fi Im certainly not an expert. I judt don't get how that would make any sense. If I have my 3g connection turned off and only have wi-fi on, I cant get any calls or text messages then right?
    anyhow,

I went on to the at&t site to check the breakdown of my usage anh found this

I do know that I did go to blackberry.net for something (dont remember what) I don't remember going all of those times listed.
The phone is new so im still "playing with it" a lot. but this worries me.

This wap.cingular- is that something that will, show up each time i use the internet on my phone?
Those two [edit]THREE[/edit] jump out at me. Now for me 78MB in a day is low, but I know I'm out of the ordinary. The browser would certainly use more than any other BB. Making sure you're connected to WiFi when available will cut back a lot. If you get emails with picture or sound files to open, try using a PC instead of the phone. Refreshing less with social apps would trim it back a little also.

I think you might have missed what was said in an earlier post. You don't have to turn off the 3G, just the data portion (Data services) of the settings in the 'Mobile Network Options' screen. That way, you will still be able to send/recieve text messages and phone calls as they do not use the data feature. Then you can use your WiFi for all data usage and it won't run through the proxies as someone mentioned.

    hope that helps
I tried setting my data services to "off" and after doing so I was not able to get on the Internet. I got a message saying "unable to connect to the Internet.please try again later" what am I doing wrong?

Same here. Setting data services to "off" does allow phone calls but when I try to go to a web site I get the same "unable to connect" message. I'm not sure what I'm missing, but this sEems to defeat the whole purpose of having wifi.

To test out this theory i just tried to make a call with data service set to off. I dialed the number, hit send and got a message saying "radio is off" it gave the option to restore connection or cancel.

If you're connected to WiFi, it should prioritize all data through it. Shouldn't need to turn anything off. Unless there's something different in OS6 from all the other OS.

That's the way I understood the way it worked before I got the torch. Now I'm wondering if I made the wrong decision. I love my new phone but this is ridiculous with the data usage nonsense.

When I tried it with data services off it allowed me to make a call. I clicked on the connections bar from the home screen, selected Mobile Network Options, and changed Data Services to Off. But in this mode I couldn't acess the internet. I have wifi enabled right now and when I look on the Service Status screen, it shows my BES and BIS connection as "wifi", so shouldn't that mean it is bypassing the cell network?

My AT&T rep told me that they had ran a test, streaming pandora 24 hours a day for a month and it didn't come anywhere close to going over 2gb of data. I'm not sure where she got her information, but she tried to tell me I didn't need the unlimited plan I had. Needless to say, I kept it.

Well just so you know, with Wifi, AT&T and your BlackBerry. Unless you have the "Mobile Network"(3G) turned off, all data will route through AT&T's proxies and will count towards your data plan. If you want to use Wifi and have it not count towards your monthly limit, go to Manage Connections and turn the "Mobile Network" off.
Are you sure about this CX? I've been using BB's for a long time and talked to a lot of people and used a lot of wifi and data and I've never heard this. I'm almost certain that on wifi, it does *not* use the AT&T network for data. I have talked to numerous AT&T techs and many other people. In addition, my data usage confirms this.

Where did you get this information?

Right, I have to agree with you LuvMyBB... I'm not sure where he got that idea... How could this physically be true, if you were in an area where no mobile data service was available, but wifi was, and you were able to surf the web, dl emails, etc? That's the point of having wifi - to bypass the mobile data services portion. And think about it: ATT would prefer this, as their network isn't overworked. They still get your money for the data you didn't use. So for them, it's a win-win.

When I log into ATT to check my data usage, it's extremely low - and that's because most of my data usage is over wifi.

There must be something wrong with the OP's settings.
He should check the "Manage Connections" icon, then "Service Status" at the bottom. There, it will tell you what connection is being utilized for each service.
Currently, Im on wifi, and mine reads as follows:

    Blackberry Internet Service
    Connection: Wi-Fi

    Blackberry Enterprise Service
    Connection: Wi-Fi

    Mobile Network
Coverage: EDGE (my home location sucks)
    Provider: AT&T

If "Blackberry Internet Service" is showing EDGE or 3G instead, then you know you're not using wi-fi, and any data usage will count towards your quota.

Yeah for some reason, three huge files were downloaded. It's not your use pattern, you just need to figure out what those 3 huge files are and.. Not do that anymore.

As hannabb pointed out, there are 3 internet connections that are the reason the OP's usage is so high. Not sure what the OP did, but that's a lot of MB and not normal usage.

I've got 16 days left on my billing cycle and I've used 48MB so far. I get social feeds in all the time, plenty of email, and web surfing almost every day. Very little youtube and don't stream anything.

Are you sure you didn't download anything?! 19MB, 28MB and 39MB are not small for a cell phone website at all. Sounds more like an App download to me.

As for this whole Data and Wi-Fi thing, it would not make sense whatsoever to connect to Wi-Fi and still route data through AT&T. I would make sure that 'Wi-Fi wins' or 'Wi-Fi always' is checked off. I don't believe that this is the case here though like everyone is assuming, I just think OP downloaded something.

That's way too big to be an app itself. Podcasts are the only thing I ever download that size..

Yea if no one else is having these "data" issues...then you have to chalk it up to user error. Obviously he's downloaded or streamed some stuff that ate up a large chunk of his data. To blame it on how the Torch handles data is ridiculous. If you can't stay within your 2GB allowance (or whatever it may be) then switching to another phone won't likely make it happen

It's pathetic that these carriers put on dats caps. There's no reason for it. They charge you an arm and a leg as it is and then you have to worry about the data meter so instead of enjoying the net with an expensive smartphone, you have to limit yourself to texting as to not use up the data. The only reason for data caps is to pickpocket the consumer with the tiered pricing which is a joke. Of course they'll tell you their network can't handle the traffic so they can justify their tiered pricing system, but that's a bunch of bull.
