While nothing has been confirmed, the BlackBerry 6 video shown at WES had a virtual keyboard. I'd imagine that the virtual keyboard would show up when the physical keyboard is hidden and vice versa.
I certainly hope not. This needs the 9000 keyboard.
One of the compare photos showed the 9800 side by side with the 8900 -- it has the same size keyboard more or less, so it looks like the 9000 keyboard will remain one of a kind.

As I recall, the 8900 didn't have a bad keypad. But I only used it twice at a T-Mobile store.

Well, same size maybe, but the buttons are way different, and the 9800's keyboard has the guitar fret-esque lines through the keyboard, much like the 9000/9700's. I just hope it's a carbon copy of the 9000, not the 9700. I can't explain why, but I much prefer the 9000's.

I didn't mean to suggest it would be identical to the 8900 keyboard, just that the photo showed that the 8900 and the 9800 have the same sized keyboards. That is also the size of the not-pictured 9700's keyboard, which is identical to the 9800 slider keyboard, frets and all (as the picture below shows). There's no question that the slider's keyboard is not identical (certainly not size wise) to the 9000 keyboard.
The 9000 is generally reckoned to have the best keyboard of any BlackBerry. RIM did a heap of research on that keyboard before it was released. Typing on a 9000 was demonstrated to be faster than on almost any other mobile phone keyboard.
They only used it on one single phone and then they moved to the 9800 and now the 9700. Both of which have different keycap shapes and are sized different from the 9000. SOMETHING must have happened to make RIM drop the 9000 keyboard. I have no idea what.
Personally I liked and still like the old Curve 83xx series keyboard. Mrs. Pete6 still uses an 8310 and sh won't let me change it for a more modern phone cuz she likes the keyboard and the colors it is painted. Says she can read it easier than my black 9700.
Now, as to the virtual keyboard, it would make sense to use the real keyboard in the upright (portrait and slider open) orientation - so's ya can still use the phone one-handed - and a virtual keyboard when the phone is held horizontally (landscape). I can also see a use for a virtual keyboard when the phone is upright (portrait) and the slider closed (keyboard out of use).
If RIM do this then we will have a Storm 2.x + a 9700-ish sort of combo-phone.
At least that is what I am imagining since RIM ain't called me to say .
Can someone pin my pin:21CC776B because I'm on cb via BlackBerry and I'm not told about when someone replies to what I say but! A question bnout the storm2 keyboard. Because the 9800 will take the storms virtual keyboard and add it to the 9800 with out surepress but. On the storm. When u turn the keyboard to the 1-9 and text using the abc mode can u turn the t9 on so it'll be like texting on a razor or another 1-9 keyboard?
