Right... so the Torch uses the new FS-1 battery. My old Storm2 had AWFUL battery life on the DX-1, so i was looking forward to the Torch. Now i find that the original DX-1 battery has 1400mAh, while the FS-1 has 1270mAh. Are these figures correct?

And RIM, what is the point of releasing a NEW phone with NEWER hard- and software which takes up MORE battery life, and then fitting a smaller battery?

I am actually getting about 24 to 30 hours of use from a charge. This is using 3G and wifi (I do use smart wifi for the hot spots which does conserve battery and I also use battery booster, which turns off wifi when the phone is locked).
I am pretty much impressed, I find that I am also using the music player and videos quite a bit as well which I never did on my 9000. Basically I am using the torch considerably more than any other blackberry I have had and getting as much life out of it charge to boot.
Maybe your battery is a bit suspect.

There's much more to it than just mAh size. As well..nothing really new hardware wise from RIM, although the software IS new..and this is what makes the difference. You could have 2 batteries of the same size, but with poorly designed software on one of them, the battery life's would be completely different. The current OS6 seems to run just fine with the 1270mAh, as i'm sure the software is designed to run less juice than previous models.

Perhaps there was issues with running a bigger mAh battery with the internals on the Torch. Could be that the bigger batteries put out more heat, which in turn caused the processor to heat up more. Only ones who know are RIM themselves. It could also be something simple like the 1400 was simply too big to be compatible with the internals of the Torch. Either way in general..i think most people are getting good battery life with the Torch, even though there seems to be some bum batteries being issued.

I am NOT constantly on the phone all day long. But by the end of the day, the battery is just about dead. It's not a huge deal for me as I can easily plug it in here at home and I have a car charger for when I am on the go. But, I did think the battery would last longer than it does.

There's lots of tips in this forum about how to improve battery life (turning down screen resolution, turning off GPS and WiFi when not in use..etc) and if you haven't tried them I would suggest it, otherwise it could be that you have a bum battery, in which case i'd suggest trying to get a replacement thru the dealer you bought from.

EDIT: Also if you haven't upgraded to the latest .246 then i'd suggest that as well.

This is my very first smartphone There is so much I have to learn! I have been reading the forums here and they have been an immense help already

That said, I get better battery life on my Torch than I did on my 9650, so...

Getting two solid days with heavy use and a few feeds\Apps refreshing every 15 mins in the background and wifi constantly on.

I'm getting decent battery life, also 24-30 hours as someone else reported. Unless I go nuts with the Hard Rock Casino game (serious fun for 3.99 you've gotta try it). I learned a few tricks when I got a Storm2 after being used to a boring old phone with no fun stuff that used to last a week. The tricks pay off on Torch too. I think the key one which I do without thinking now is to hit the screen lock when I am finished what I am doing (versus waiting for it to timeout). Also I only turn on Bluetooth when I am in the car, off when out. If I'm out for a long time I try to remember to turn off WiFi too. Depends of course on your personal habits and other toys.

With Storm I had a charger cradle that would also do a spare battery and that was sooooo handy. Haven't seen equivalent for Torch. I have a spare AC adapter and have ordered spare battery and charger. Sometimes those spare batteries are handy, if you are on your way out and forgot to charge or will be away for a long time. Reasonably cheap on eBay even for OEM.

I tend to agree, the battery life for the 9800 is very poor.

I'm coming from the 9000 that has a huge battery, and thus used to constant use throughout the day. I find the 9800 looses 15% capacity in the first hour after being on charge all night, of little to no usage.

I also agree there is more to the story than just the battery capacity. But RIM must have conducted tests (just as we do) and must know by adding a large screen with touch panel is a major drain on the power.

I have seen posts about switching off the touch panel, this would be a good approach. Some of the devices we design and build have this feature is customers need 14 hours of always on usage.

Its a business tool with all the extras like FaceBook, LinkedIn, Twitter, full browsing (which I love), etc... They cannot expect users to start switching off elements of the phone just to get a reasonable battery life for the day.

My 9800 battery is empty at around 7pm, with less than normal usage as a business tool. There is plainly something wrong to have such poor performance.

I'm seriously considering returning to my 9000 now its been serviced.

RIM have added a very useful tool to know what apps are using the CPU, memory etc. I am speechless they did not have a page showing the top talkers on the network.

What a better way to find what apps are using the most data, but also find the apps that maybe abusing your battery.

It would have to track all apps regardless of if they are running or not and store cumulative logs of every single app... That's a lot different than the existing utilities that just show what is currently running.

Besides there is a much simpler solution, just use an app like Meterberry that monitors drain per hour. That tells you much better what is increasing the drain compared to what you were originally looking for...

I agree with you. the battery life on the Torch is very poor than the Bold.
Would the stock bold batter fit the Torch ?
