Hi brand new here just picked up a new unlocked 9800 for my wife as she prefers a physical qwerty keyboard.

I had BBs at work and they were great for email etc but seems none of these will work on a standard data plan. I am in the UK and can't seem to access Appworld over wifi (message along the lines of Unsupported Software version).

Looks like it will only be of use for calls/texts (I hope). Is OS 6 still supported on Appworld, I can look at possibility of getting a sim with BIS access, but if support for email etc is still limited there seems little point.

Looking at sending phone back, am I being premature is there an easy way to get more functionality (Facebook/Google Maps etc) or do I just get her a Nokia with a keyboard?

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Andy

Hi. just clearing out some stuff and came across my old Torch. It booted up but without any supporting plan or network is good , only just, for browsing. Small screen and tiny keys means it's now consigned to the history pile. Good luck with your device. It was great at that time.

Also have a Bold and that looks to have a bit more hope.

OS6 is still supported on Appworld. You may need to create a Blackberry ID to access the Appworld. Or, just put in your SIM card, enter the Blackberry ID therein. I have an older device with OS6 (9300 3G), and it works just fine (ATT in USA, with BIS), so the 9800 should work fine, too.

I have a 9800, and I find it to be a rather heavy device, compared to other legacy BBs. Also, the hidden QWERTY keyboard may or may not appealing, depending on how one uses the 9800. The best PKB is probably going to be the Bold 9900, and you'll get OS7.1 on it, too, instead of OS6.

I got my Torch through AT&T in 2011. It was "issued" to me by my employer to use as my company phone. In 2013, I was issued a 'Droid as an upgrade so I unlocked my 9800 and switched it to T-Mobile. It was my personal phone since.

However, lack of modern apps and limit @3G caused me to use my latest "company" phone for more than just work with apps such as WAZE, banking apps, fitness/health apps, social media and hotspot.

Last month, the time finally came to retire it. I've been a BB fan since the early 2000's. My 9800 now joins the ranks with my 9000, 8800 and my Playbook.
