When I answer a phone call, my ear activates the MUTE icon without noticing... can I turn off those icons from the screen while I am answering a call?

Can always get a lock app that locks the screen during phone calls, patternlock is one

Do you have a screen protector on? Some screen protectors prevent the proximity sensor from working. You can fix this by removing the protector or by cutting a hole a couple mm left of the led where there is a little purpleish dot.
