now whenever I type messages, it highlights every word over 2 characters long as if it's spelled wrong - and the suggestions it gives to correct the words are ridiculous.
sounds like you have predictive text turned on. options>typing and input > typing change back to direct for either virtual or physical kb whichever you're using.
I had the same problem however there is a simple fix since the the fix above did not work for me. The reason why my spell checker was highlighting almost every word wrong was that the input language was set to Espanol instead of English. Some how after I updated the core software it changed it self for some odd reason.
Options > Typing and input > Language and then make sure your input language is set to the right language your typing in (English)
