Was looking at picking up a used BB Style to use as my backup phone....is it possible to use it on Verizon's service? They seem to have the same bands of cdma and evdo? Or am I mistaken??

No. Not possible. Verizon will not activate a device from another carrier on their network.

You're not mistaken at all. They do use the same bands for CDMA, and the hardware is identical in all ways between say a Sprint Bold and a Verizon Bold. There is physically and technically stopping it from working. Problem is (and noted by SwitchBeach) that VZW will only activate a VZW branded phone (based on the ESN or MSID). Sprint is no better, and will only activate a Sprint branded phone. Some local carriers like MetroPCS will simply add the ESN/MSID to their system.
