Happened to me earlier.. somehow merged with your Messages icon..

GO into Messages.. Options then I believe General Options and find the area where you can change it so you can always keep SMS and Messages buttons as seperate..

Either that, or somehow you accidentally put the icon into "Hide" mode. I did that by accident and thought I had uninstalled my Facebook. Nearly had a heart attack. I went back to the applications folder and unclicked it from the "Hide" feature and it popped back into place.
