    are they stored on the device? how to make sure it is backedup when doing a backup/restore? any way to make it save to the sd card?

    There is a folder for saved msgs either in your applications folder or home/app screen.

    Try going 2 ur message folder hit the menu button view folders then saved messages

    Yes, I see that folder. But when I do a backup it does not seem to be backed up? Doesn't seem to be any option in that folder menu.
