Only the Phone app. Unless you are texting or using a TON of data.. which is hard to do.

Only if you don't have the data plan (bberry plan), which verizon requires you to have.

To answer your question posed in the title "What app uses minutes?"
Only phone calls will use your minutes.

Some other things that will cost $$ are:

SMS (aka text messages) are not charged as voice or data. It has a separate per text message charge unless you have some sort of a text messaging option on your plan

Data (everything else) are charged by MB's unless you are on a unlimited data plan.
