Ok - so I only just realised you can do this.

Go into your email, then hold your finger on a specific email and voila! you will filter by email thread!

yeah if you hover over the contact field where it says "from" it will "search" for all the email to/from that person. idk if it works for sms, but you can search by sender in the menu for all of the messages.
