A RIM OS has three version numbers:

    Application (4.7.0.148)
Application is basically everything that the phone does. From the SMS App, to BlackBerry Messenger, it is composed of all the applications that comes by default on your BlackBerry.

It is also the number people usualy refer to when talking about an OS release. In case of the latest Verizon update, it is 4.7.0.148.
    Platform (4.0.0.181)
The platform is basically the "drivers" to the OS. It is the layer responsible of communicating commands to the hardware. It controls the cell phone radio, screen display, power regulation, camera (hardware) as well as the bluetooth radio. It is commonly refered to as the radio file on CrackBerry.

In case of Verizon's latest release, the platform number is 4.0.0.181.
    Package (4.7.0.203)
RIM develops applications and platform separately. When they decide to put the two together for testing, they give the combo a version number. This is the package number. Arguably, this should be number used to refer to a particular OS number, but convention uses the application number instead.

In case of Verizon's latest release, the package version is 4.7.0.203.
When two releases have the same package number, it is safe to assume that they are the exact same release. The leaked version of the Verizon's release has the same package number, therefore it is the same.

There is also another number reported in your about screen:

    Branding Version
The Branding Version changes from phone to phone and doesn't change on an OS update. Is will always be the same on your phone. Branding is saved on special memory while in factory.

The version number is formated the following way:
    1.0.XXX.YYY
Where XXX is your Vendor ID and YYY is the Revision Number. Here are possible Vendor IDs (That I know of):
    • 001 Research In Motion

A RIM OS has three version numbers:

    Software - Platform - Package

Software is the software part of the OS, all the SMS apps, phone apps and everything.

Platform is the equivalent of the "drivers" in Windows. That's what is in charge of communicating with the hardware. It is also commonly called radio file here but it is also in charge of the display and sound.

Package is, well, software and platform.

Software has it's own version number (in this case, 4.7.0.148)
Platform has it's own version number (4.0.0.181)

Package is a number that gets incremented everytime RIM decides to put a software + platform together for testing. In this case, it is 4.7.0.203.

So, in the case of the official Verizon release:
    Package: 4.7.0.203
    Software: 4.7.0.148
    Platform: 4.0.0.181

In the case of the leaked .148 release:
    Package: 4.7.0.203
    Software: 4.7.0.148
    Platform: 4.0.0.181

Therefore, the leaked and the official Verizon release ARE IDENTICAL.
Great Post...now maybe the numerous threads and all the questions within the threads will decrease..

    OK..wishful thinking...

So why is the Vodafone .141 'official' release 10megs larger than the .141 leak showing multiple file size differences and additional files when extracted and compared?

Vodafone had a different package number than the leaked version.

Also, don't forget that Vodaphone uses the 9500, so you need to be sure to compare the 9500 official with 9500 leak.

If I remember right, the leak was English and Spanish only while the actual release was all languages for obvious reasons. Vodaphone is a very large company. Languages add quite a bit to a package. Could be wrong. Only had it installed like five minutes and .148 a got leaked unexpectedly.

I vote for an AP Storm Forum... (Advanced Placement).

Can I and some others have that please? We'll talk about all the fancy stuff way above the normal Joe's pay grade.

Hhaha! Personally I would rather have a list of related thread when someone posts one right before it actually posts.

I'll vote in favor of that. Maybe by invite only?? At least has to have some sort of restriction as to whom can post in it.

That list is horribly outdated and it seems like every ID the user didn't know, he just filed the holes with Vodaphone.

Edit: And the list below is a bit outdated too... 109 is now Bell Mobility Canada. I did based my original list on a variation of that list.

With additions, sure, but once a Vendor has been assigned an ID, they should stick with it.
