Surepress by far is not a gimmick. Anyone who thinks so has something seriously wrong with them.

You can type so much better with Surepress then any other normal touch screen phone. I love it and can't wait to see it to improve on the Storm 3.

    =)

Surepress is nice, but as others have said, I dislike the "click" sound. If they could remove that, it would be peachy.

I like surepress... but it kinda 'cheapens' the look of the phone. I mean, its pretty cool, and the click makes typing pretty accurate ... but it just makes the phone feel less complete, because of the gap (even though its small) .. I kinda feel that RIM should release a completely solid touch screen device ... like the slider, but with a fuller/bigger screen and no keypad.

I've had the surepress since the S1 first came out ... and I do like it, just lately it has been starting to bug me a bit.

I have gotten used to SurePress but now that I've started using my iPod touch I wish my storm 2 didn't have surepress. I type much faster without it.

Definitely keep SurePress but have it as an option. SurePress is one of the best features of Storm series.

Yeah. Also there are 2 reasons that the 9800 will not have surepress. Number 1 it has a physical keyboard, most people will use the physical keyboard for most typing, Reason 2 is that Verizon has an exclusive on the surepress technology in the US market. I feel I can type faster with my storm2 then i could on my curve 8330 tour or curve 8900. I can also destroy any friend i have with an iphone or android touch screen. I can type faster and more accurately then most people i know with a regular touchscreen device.

Voted "yes" because I enjoy SurePress on my S2. I checked out a Moto Droid and an iPhone, and not briefly (one brother has the Droid and another brother has an iPhone plus Touch), before feeling quite confident that I wouldn't grow to dislike SurePress later on. Not only do I continue to enjoy it, it's even better after getting a refurb unit with the updated screen hardware. And when it comes time to choose another device I will be looking for another device with it, hopefully incorporated still in the Storm series.
    This device rocks.

The odds of me ditching my Storm for an Android or Jesus phone are somewhere between slim and none. Since the A and J phones don't have Surepress or BBM, I can't conceive of me using either one, in lieu of some BB phone, and the BB phone that suits me best is a touchscreen phone such as the Storm2. If RIM comes out with a touchscreen-sans-surepress, they just lost my interest.

Find surepress to be by far the best feature of the Storm series. Not only can I type much faster than my iPhone, but everyone I show the technology to freaks out (especially other touch screen users)!

RIM really needed to step up their game marketing this device and fell flat. They could have done so well capturing people's initial reaction...

Then get rid of it and get yourself an android or Jesus phone.
Gosh, I was just participating in the poll that was entitled, "Touch Screens - Sure Press or Not?" I didn't know you would get so upset and nasty. Maybe you should contact the moderator and tell them that you don't like when people participate in polls when they provide answers you don't like? It is always bad when one poster runs around trying to tamp down the opinions of other posters. Totally lame.

What is "totally lame" is YOUR response that you think my comment was the result of my being upset. I was simply making a statement for the OBVIOUS, and was in no way being nasty, unlike YOU. Since you don't like Surepress wouldn't it make sense for you to consider another phone?? "After having the storm2 for several months I think surepress is a gimmick."

I am considering another phone and have said so openly. There is nothing nefarious about my post. I simply responded to a poll that was posted to the forum...then I was attacked and then attacked again. Why have the poll in the first place if posters will be attacked for responding to it?

Ultimately, I think surepress is more of a gimmick. It doesn't add a lot to the experience for me. I am just one person expressing my opinion in the context of the poll. Never did I think I would be attacked for taking my time to participate in the poll. And never did I say that RIM is terrible or that Blackberries are pathetic. Again, I just responded to the poll. Excuse for doing so. Next time, I won't, knowing that you'll be there to tamp down anyone who doesn't adhere to group-think. Crazy.

I hope not!!! I love surepress, I think that's what makes the storm so unique. Besides I love watching ipod, iphone users try to navigate through my phone and get all frustrated and ultimately give up with a look like WTF!! Followed by "How the **** do you use this thing"???!!!!

That's right...It's only a select few that can operate such a sophisticated device and you my friend are NOT qualified! Now resume to your basic glass tapping experience.

    +1
Had to bold that last line. Awesome.
I have a friend who's been hemming and hawing about making a foray into the smartphone arena as he wouldn't be using it for anything special, he just likes the tech. He's had his heart set on an iPhone for.. gosh, over a year, and won't change his opinion even after fiddling with my S2 for an afternoon.
Of course, that may have been exacerbated by my poking fun at him for tapping on it and not having anything happen. Oops.

Apple products are great for people who don't mind a product that can be used ONLY IN THE FASHION THAT STEVE JOBS DECIDES IT CAN BE USED IN. Sometimes "simpler" is better. In the case of many Apple products, they take "simpler" to the extreme, limiting their products usefulness and useability factor. For the masses, the super-simple hold great appeal. While I don't like everyday things to be overly complicated to use, I also don't want products "dumbed down" too much. Apple loves form over function. Function holds more sway with me. Sorry, Apple.

LOL, you are trying to sell the Tour, yet you give reasons why u think it sucks. Doesn't that seem to be self-defeating?

First, I hate polls, since they seem to never have MY answer as an option. Example here is, I like SurePress but that is NOT the reason I bought the Storm to begin with (it was a plus, but certainly not the reason).

At any rate, it seems reasonably clear that more people prefer SP than not, from all the previous polls as well as comments. Realizing that any poll here (another reason not to like them) is worthless in terms of any validity, certainly there appears to be more likers trolling Crackberry than non-likers.

While Storm 3 rumors are thin and unreliable, I seem to recall reading something that indicated it would maintain SP. Other touch devices will not, but then, other touch devices also have physical keyboards (now THAT is one reason I chose a Storm, I detest physical keyboards).

I don't know if there is some technical reason why a device cannot have both, but there may be some prohibitive issue (i.e., cost or device conflict) that keeps RIM from doing this.

While I respect your opinion, SurePress is not a gimmick. SurePress is a unique technology that makes all the sense for the RIM family of product which has consistently provided its users with a physical keyboard. It makes all the sense to develop SurePress which simulates that experience. It gives immediate feedback and replicates the type of use we have been accostomed to on a PC screen with a mouse: select (touch) and click (press). I hope RIM will continue to refine it. It is far superior to touch alone.

    Here are examples of gimmick:
    1. 'Retina Display' (it is IPS on an LCD!)...the technology has been there for years.
    2. 'Facetime': Front facing camera has been in many devices years, here are recent ones: N900 from Nokia and HTC EVO 4G from Sprint.

I can go on an on but you have gotten the picture, I presume.

While I agree 100% with your well stated post, I do have an issue with your two examples of a "gimmick."

While the technology certainly existed prior to the iPhone 4, it never had any market penetration and, for the most part, the vast majority of people were not even aware of it. To take existing technology and, perhaps, improve upon it slightly, and put it into a device with HUGE marketshare, is not a "gimmick" but rather, smart branding. I'm not an iPhone fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I believe in giving props where they are due.

I recall, back in 1964, attending the NY World's Fair. Bell Labs had a display with a video conference phone. It was an amazing (even though the person you "called" was only five feet away) demonstration of technology and even at my relatively young age of 14, I could see the future of this remarkable technology. Of course, it never materialized, but yet, most every science fiction movie made shows video conferencing. Apple will make it popular and it will cause people to want it. It's functional and thus, not a "gimmick." (Though, not sure I'd want it, lol).
