Is there a way to get the Storm 2 to thether without going through my carrier (Verizon)? If not, does that change the plan I currently have with them?

Try Tether...
Tether BlackBerry | BlackBerry Modem | Tether

Been using tether for a few months. Well worth the price!

Another vote of confidence for tether here :D
I've been trying pdanet which is free but for some reason it just stops working after a while. Anyone else encounter this when using this program, if anyone had used it

Yup, I tried PDANET with the same result, started up looked like it was working, but no go! My buddy has an android and it works perfectly on that, I spent the $40 on Tether, and have never looked back, works great, and the phone recharges while you are linked by the cable. Tether does not have any effect on the Verizon plan you have, and frankly, I think Verizon is a bit greedy on requiring two data plan charges per month to use the phone as an Air Card, when the device is using the exact same connection and network. Oh, by the way, you can't make a call when the VZAccess is enabled with the phone. Tether interrupts the data link to allow a call, but you can't do it simultaneously with a BlackBerry (in my experience).
