Test done between .86 and .90 Very Interesting results.

So this is my first thread that I'm really starting myself, so if it sucks lol i can only get better with time anyway.

I'm at work today and my cousin has the storm as well with .86. I dl'ed .90 last night so I wanted to brag about how great I feel it is. So we decide to test our OS's out against each other. Here's the line up:

Storm 1 preloaded with .75 bought in late december 08. Upgraded without a clean wipe to .86.

Storm 2 (and yours truly) preloaded with .75 bought in second week of January. Upgraded to .86 (didn't like it) with an install of it NO full wipe, then downgrade back to .75 without a full wipe, then upgrade to .90.

Now with a little knowledge of what was done. here are the...
Winners!
Accelometer <sp>:
Storm 2.
The Storm 2 was wicked fast in my version of the OS. almost a half a second faster each time.

Application Memory (Applications - Facebook, BofA , Stormlock, VZ Navigator [with location off], Youtube, Memory cleaner [OEM cleaner], and all the stuff that comes preloaded on the storm):
Storm 2.
Running the same programs, after a battery pull Storm 2 was running at 47.1 MB and Storm 1 was running at 32.6.

Browser:
Storm 1.
.86 with a lower application memory beat out .90 every time! .86 is very fast. He was boasting.

Loading a program:
Storm 2.
Point blank: No fade in menus, faster Accelometer, faster OS, everything runs faster (just about)

Quirks of .86:
LED Light, Verizon Screen of Death, Random Shutdowns, Memory leakage, Battery Drain

Quirks of .90:
Slightly slower browser, Camera not working (unless using the somewhat fix where you change the zoom range and it works).

Positive Sides of .86:
Faster than .75, but not the fastest, except for the browser.

Positive Sides of .90:
Faster Camera, Faster interface, FULL portrait QWERTY keyboard, Bigger keyboard in landscape mode, bigger icons, better responsiveness, smoothness with movement of menus.

I don't know, but I'm sticking with .90. My cousin says he's sticking with .86 even though he hates the random shut offs, and the LED lights drive him crazy, but his browser is faster, so it's "better" than .90.

Thanks for the side by side comparisons. I've had .86 and .90 and though I did not compare them side by side as you did. I agree with your observations. I think .90 is a much better, faster and stable OS. I think the QWERTY keyboard in portrait is way to tight to use efficiently. But at least RIM gives it to us as an option. Good post.

i went from 85 to 90 sar far so good except the camera issue the browser is ok but i still love the storm

The iphone has more comfortably spaced keys because they are missing a few keys on the screen; you can see when you put the phones side by side. RIM might want to do the same?

I have upgraded and stacked all the new OS leaks...so far .90 did 2 auto shut-offs on me and 1 auto-reboot. But otherwise, its faster, bigger font on keys, less memory loss.

Im glad that you noted the browser being slower in .90. so many people posted that .90s browser was faster than .86's for them (and I dont doubt them). For me, while .90 is working very well, the browser is absolutely slower. the 'timer' image shows up way more. seems like its prolly either the way it caches content or, more likely, the way it processes java.

All the the apps were loaded on the .75 that came loaded on the system, we both run Vista x64 and trying to get JL working was more effort than we both wanted to go through, even following the tutorial, we would connect our storms and it wouldn't do anything to the storm. So whenever we upgraded we just installed the operating system (still connected to the interent) and ran desktop manager.

Sounds to me like .85 is still better than both, i havent had any probs and the only difference i noticed with .86 was the camera being 1/2 sec faster. (I also benchmarked with 2 storms, due to replacing w/ insurance.) anywho, i think ill stick to .85 for now i dont know if i dare put .90 on here yet.

.85 does seem to be the best overall.........

Looking at the different poll's on here, it seems as though more are leaning towards the .90. I am currently running .85 and might try the new os this weekend but .85 is working well for me at the moment.

Well I just put on .90 last night. I had a few problems in the beginning, but they worked themselves out.

This build is faster than my earlier one, however I don't think it's as good as sliced bread as some ppl are saying.

I don't know what it is, but compared with the iphone, the storm is just missing that finesse.

I haven't encountered any bugs yet, but my mem did tank overnight with no use. 50 - 30.

Only other apps are opera and quick pull.

Oh, and pressing the L in portrait mode is straight up impossible for me, I invariably always hit back space. I feel like austin powers in the cart in the tunnel.

I am sticking with .90 as well. Best so far, IMHO.

i haven't noticed a difference in the browser speeds, but my .86 would always freeze when using bbm, so i'm stikcing with .90

I really like .90 also. It's release worthy in my opinion, BUT I also doubt that VZW will release it. They are close thou, I have no doubt we will see 1 of the .9Xs released by VZW. :)

I like the comparison, side by side. Although I did not dl any of the other OS's I do have .90. And I agree that .90 is a lot better than .75.
