I am going away to the dominican and called Telus to see if I could disable the data connection while I'm gone but they said it's not possible with the storm. I just need it for texting and the odd call and wanted to know if my SIM card from the storm from Telus would work on my old rogers phone that is unlocked.
There's a very good chance. You should be able to test before you leave home and see if the phone accepts the SIM. Don't expect it to find a useable signal and make a call within USA because it will be blocked by all the US carriers, but you should be able to scan networks and see any GSM carriers within range.
