This is a solution that I figured out on my own after reading a ton of threads that pointed me in wrong directions.
If you are having trouble getting your email to setup, try changing your email password to something else, preferably something without the following characters, "$&4@".
Background:
In the mail app, if you are using a Storm, I found that my Gmail password was TOO strong for the device to handle. The characters in my password that I assume are mess up the hash data are "$&4@", the rest were a combination of upper and lower case letters.
