I am still on .713 and the phone works.
Is it safe to update to current version or should I just stay where I am?
And if I get a PB, will I need to update?

Are we on 4.x?
We need 5.0 for Playbook.

If you os is running good why mess with it? I'm still on .607 and mine runs flawlessly, so my next upgrade with be a new device!
After what I saw when the last update came out, I decided to just sit tight with .713 on my Storm2. It wasn't broke so I didn't need to fix it.
I just wanted to confirm that a PB will be fully functional...well...assuming IF I get one, it FUNCTIONS! LOL but its really not that funny given the number of people who are still encountering issues.
I would imagine that RIM will [eventually] put out a phone running on the QNX platform.
How important is the bedside mode that dims the clock at night?
Well you will lose that function if you update. (there's a hack around to fix it but I'm not techie enough to mess with it)
This may seem trivial to many but it is a big feature that I miss and unfortunately we didn't know in advance that it would be disabled.
Hope this helps in making your decision.
Good Luck
Turbo you just made my decision for me!
Sometime I need to use my 9930 as my alarm clock.
I already lost the wake up tones I really liked in the last update.
I am not willing to give up the dimming feature. if the phone doesn't go dark in Bedside Mode that's a dealbreaker for me.
Thanks!
Oh yes...and Thank You RIM once again...for screwing up something that already works.
I personally do not believe that RIM can stay in business more than another year or two.
THey are falling too far behind the available technology.
Glad what I had to say helped you out.
I've since moved on and now have an iPhone 4S.
Bought my wife an iPad 2 for Christmas and after using it for a few months, I couldn't resist. So when my contract was up, I made the switch.
My contacts, mail and calendar are syncing with Google flawlessly.
Anyway, it was time for a change.
Good Luck
