I'm either missing something or this is extremely annoying.
You can set the convenience keys to practically anything EXCEPT the speed dial list.
Is there an app for that? (Not intended as an IPhone commercial!)

i use shortcutme. i rely heavily on speed dial and when i switched from Curve (where you could use all buttons on keyboard for speed dial) to Storm i was completely lost. then i remembered that SCM could speed dial. so all i have to do is hit convenience key and then the letter or combo of letters i've chosen for that contact. :)
Yes..I also find it very annoying that RIM blundered with this and you cant set the speed dial list for the convenience keys...just ridiculous. And before anyone else recommends other ways to get to the speed dial list...I KNOW THEM ALL. Thats not what I want. I want to press the convenience key and have my list. Period. RIM better get on the ball because these are the types of little annoyances that drive people away. I am looking more and more at the DROID and I can save myself $15 a month by NOT being on BES.
I have shortcutme and QuickLaunch. Both are highly functional tools that essentially do the same thing, but they do it differently. I used to roll with strictly ShortCutMe on my 8330 because it was so great I figured, why even bother with QuickLaunch. But now I use both and they both have their advantages. QL is cool because it has many other features as well including reset and tilt lock.
I won a copy of VersaTool which allows me program several buttons on my BlackBerry, including left and right convenience buttons, mute button and the red "hang up" button. It recognizes up to a triple click of each. I have used it to create my speed dial list (you can actually have multiple if you'd like).
VersaTool also has a few other tools as well, weather, tip calculator, flashlight, program scheduling, currency/unit converter, and camera control. It also can create pop up menus and home screen bookmarks.
Anyway, that is what I use for my speed dial list. I actually like it a lot. OP is correct though, this is a major oversight on the Storm. I loved having each key on my Curve assigned to a phone number. Still miss that.
I'm understanding the frustration of not being able to set a convenience key to do something essential, there's actually a few things that can't be set to them.
What I'm not understanding is why not just use the actual phone button?
Send -> dialpad, press and hold to dial contact.
I would like to know the other ways you can do this. Thanks.
+1 to wdanker above. I stumbled upon VersaTool a few weeks back and love it. And the developer is improving it constantly. It does many many things, including setting the convenience keys for single click and double click, etc.
We're talking about for the phone here, right?
All I do hit the green phone button to bring up the phone app, then press the speed dial number for the person I want to call...I can't imagine it being much easier than that... (hold the # corresponding to the speed dial number you want to call down for ~3 seconds).
Also seems to be just as many steps as having a shortcut key to the list...am I missing something here?
Your method certainly works, just have to memorize who is who on that list. Also, my phone is not set up to bring up the dial pad on launch, it brings up the call log.
The way I have VersaTool setup allows me to just hit the end button and up pops a menu with names on it, push who I want and it dials. Easier for me and probably just a touch faster. It also means I am not limited to 10 names.
None of this is as easy as speed dial with a physical keyboard. Just press and hold a letter and the phone dials. so I could remember pretty easy who I assigned to each.
Would be nice to have more than 10...well, 8 really, since "0" isn't available and "1" is reserved for VM.
I don't have any problems memorizing the numbers, since I've been using the same slots for the same people for years now.
The VersaTool sounds like a fun App but I have a deep-seated aversion to paying for an app. Good things should be FREE. :)
With VersaTool you can basically have an unlimited number of contacts accessible with one of VT's shortcuts. Set up a list of contacts, then set that list to come up when you click one of the convenience keys....or the mute button, or double click convenience keys, or double mute, etc. There are lots of options.
No, I'm not paid by VT. I just really like the apps by that developer. I use all 3, VersaTool, HoneyDew and PodTrapper. Great apps and a developer who is very responsive to questions/requests.
