I noticed coming out of one of the canyon roads today that instead of the bars icon in the upper right hand corner of the home screen it said "SOS" in red letters....im guessing enough service for an emergency call only?
I think you're right in the SOS meaning. I had it come up a few times in a poor coverage area. If it keeps happening though, your SIM card may be loose.
If I remember correctly it is for when you have bad service you may wander onto other networks and use it for emergency calls only. I've gotten onto Vodafone, AT&T and T-Mobiel before (was checking which carrier it was connecting to)
I am not positive, but I am pretty sure you have absolutely no signal to make a call. I leave my phone on(accidentally) from time to time when I fly and I see that at 36,000 ft. Who knows....Delta is getting wi-fi up that high now.
i get the SOS when I go to my moms. I'm pretty sure it does translate to SOL, considering there is about 15 minutes worth of dead zone driving on this particular rural trip in CNY. I will try 911 next time though.
