As in what? Tilt, pickup, what? If it's tilt, more free memory and an OS of at least .75 is required for quick change from landscape to portrait. If it's pickup, dirty or sweaty hands will cause the sensativity to not be so good when you manipulate the screen because of the way it works.
And Tap interval should help... Drop it to 300 or less and just experiment. If it's still slow, then you're low on app memory, have too much stuff running in the background, or not on the latest OS (Verizon currently offering .75).
If you pull the battery and right after starting it's fast, then it's memory or running apps in the background that's slowing things down... generally speaking.
