question about tethering?
- Me and my wife are with alltel for the time being and have a 3rd cell phone we keep at home just for this purpose (we live in the country where dsl isn't available). Once the merger is complete we are both going to get BB's (betcha can't guess which one i'm gettin ). This way we can get rid of our 3rd line and both be able to get online since we each have a computer. One of my co-workers (who is with allel and has a smartphone) claims you can tether your smartphone and get online without having to pay the extra money for the service.
Does anyone know if you can actually do this? Its not like the extra $30 a month is gonna break us, but $30 you don't have to spend a month adds up.10-27-08 12:51 PMLike 0 - Yes it can be done. Basically, you'll use the BB as a wireless modem. It won't be that fast but, it's better than nothing.
Nice ID! LOL how'd ya ever guess!!!
As far as internet speed I can' complain too much with using a phone as modem (and we have a crappy samsung wafer). Its a lil slower than dsl, but still MUCH MUCH faster than dial-up.
Oh how i can't wait to get my 1st BB though10-27-08 01:00 PMLike 0 - I'm not sure about Alltel but, T-Mobile's BIS data plan is only $20 a month, unlimited.
BTW - you do get good reception where you live, don't you?10-27-08 01:04 PMLike 0 -
Yeah its good reception. my tethered phone as well as my primary cell phone both are 1 bar from full signal.10-27-08 01:11 PMLike 0 - I'm not sure about the other carriers but, T-Mobile's BlackBerry Connect is for pushed services only. It also supports other PDA platforms such as WM.10-27-08 01:11 PMLike 0
- Thats what I've read on verizon's website. My co-worker however claims you don't have to pay that extra money, but are still able to tether. His reason is that they have no way of telling if your online on your phone or tether to a computer.....................10-27-08 01:12 PMLike 0

I've never tried it though. Anybody know for sure?10-27-08 01:19 PMLike 0 - Another question......
How easy is it to go over the 5GB "soft cap" on verizon, especially if your tethering?
With alltel we have unlimited so I've never had to worry about this..........10-27-08 02:08 PMLike 0 - It depends.....
with a BIS data plan, (30 bucks a month) the tethering feature would then be an additional 30 dollars a month.
with a BES data plan, (45 bucks a month) the tethering feature would be 15 dollars more a month.
a broadband access card would be additional 60 a month. its all the same price.. tethering is an optional/non contractual feature, the card would have a contract (unless you buy it retail)
5 gigs is fairly large for downloading files, pictures, emails, and basic internet browsing... but if you plan on doing constant data flow (download/upload music, movies, etc..), youll most likely hit it pretty quickly, but there are ways of monitoring youre usage and with 2 data plans then you have 10 gigs ! after 5 gigs you get charged per MB..
on youre blackberry, usage is billed per KB, but its unlimited and you can do the math if you want.. for tethering, its billed per MB and you only get 5,120 of those.
only question i have, and maybe someone could enlighten us all-but the storm is going to be able to simultaneously handle voice and data, talk on the phone while browsing the internet, or bbiming =P, anywho--when the device is connected via USB for internet capability, id imagine you would still be able to take a phone call without it pausing youre data session? unlike current blackberry's...10-27-08 05:56 PMLike 0 - I am able to recieve a call and it not end my data session whem i'm tethered, but that is with a non-smartphone samsung wafer............10-27-08 07:53 PMLike 0
- To answer your question yes the storm does support simultaneous data and phone usage. However!! VZW and there 3g network does not support it. So if you are using it over in japan or in Europe then you would be able to use this feature. One of these years the U.S. will catch up to the rest of the world. and dont get me started on how far behind we are compared to the rest of the world.10-27-08 08:56 PMLike 0
