OS 6.0 on the storm1?
- After reading plenty of forums I see lots of people say the storm 1 have to low of app memory to handle OS 6.0 but I wonder if this is just a software issue where application memory is set with the OS. Meaning if RIM were to change how the OS to dedicate more memory for application than device will this work. Furthermore, who is to say that the OS will not be saved to the Device memory thus freeing up more application memory? I think if they fix this issue then this device would be a winner. What to others think?
But that's part of the difference between revolutionary and evolutionary. Is this going to change the way BB's act and how people interface with them? Or is it just a skin with a webkit browser? We've yet to see. Fingers crossed!04-21-10 02:13 PMLike 0 - Don't expect revolutionary but it may do a decent job of playing catch up, and don't forget, OS 6.0 will be installed in the new devices which will have considerably more app memory. This means that they can add more files and add more code to make it look pretty and do more. That said, logically speaking, it makes sense will take at least the same space as OS 5.0 if not more.
As to the Storm being supported, no one said the original Storm would stop being supported. RIM will continue developing and preparing bug fixes, etc. It just might not be anything substantial versus what we have now.
Then again, as I stated before, we never know. The Storm1 could see the update, or maybe the Storm2 will be left behind as well. We just don't know and at this point everything is speculation.

It's not a cutting edge device now, and very soon it won't even be one generation behind RIM's touchscreen offerings. There is so little advantage for RIM to spend time and effort supporting this device .. it's not going to happen. Kinda sucks as a Storm owner, but from a business perspective it is the right thing to do. They need to move on, and baggage like the Storm 1 is just in the way of progress. I would rather see a truly innovative new platform on cutting edge hardware than a mediocre evolutionary platform that is held back by the needs of old devices like the Storm (and Curve 83xx, etc.) Wouldn't you?04-21-10 02:35 PMLike 0

If RIM were still supporting the S1 though (say, 5.0.0.700 to fix some things and include webkit while newer devices get 6.0), wouldn't we have seen more in the way of 9530 leaks over the past few months?04-21-10 02:59 PMLike 0 - i will say it again....its a top theme maker showing us that 1 pic. im not sure i am going to buy it yet!04-21-10 03:47 PMLike 0

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com04-21-10 04:09 PMLike 0 - i would assume 1 more official for the s1. How much the actually test it before releasing is a question though04-21-10 04:13 PMLike 0
- The Storm's major failure is the software, not the hardware. It's VERY similar to the S2 except for app memory. I love the clickscreen and it's going to be tough to move away from that. And I'm used to the BB OS, so I'm hesitant to change...this 6.0 really needs to be great, I think RIM's consumer success hinges entirely on it.
The 9530 does have limited app memory but I don't think that's a major shortcoming for launching this new OS. In the least, RIM could give us the webkit browser.
Let's see the first leak and how big this OS is. If it's a similar size to the current OS, or even 10-15 MB larger, there's no reason it shouldn't be released for the 9530...unless they want to bait you into buying the new model for 2 more years.
The 8330 series was supported forever...I expect the same loyalty to us.
When people think of the Storm, they picture a drunken guy that stumbled in, had a sip of beer, vomited all over the door, passed out, and woke up slowly piecing back together what happened while profusely apologizing. The Storm actually had a lot of hardware issues as well, not just software. Sinking screens, uneven presses, mechanical failures..It's the whole reason the Storm2 was engineered with a completely remade screen.
The Curve was supported because it was popular. The Storm was popular because it was the first of it's kind, but once people realized how terrible it was (and God, there was some really terrible points) it was dropping it's price (and getting sold on eBay with every mention of the Storm2) faster than a hooker can drop her panties. Which is why the Storm2 rolled out so quickly. A bandaid until they could figure out how to soothe the publics opinion.
Also, there is several differences between the Storm and the Storm2 besides 'just app memory'. You sound like people when it was close to release. "Oh, it's just app memory, who cares." There's more to the phone than that. As someone (I wish I could credit who) said 'It's not called the Storm 1.3. It's called a Storm2 for a reason.'Last edited by GlitchZero; 04-22-10 at 08:54 AM.

I have to assume the OS will take atleast 10 MBs more and the webkit alone might be another 2-4 MBs04-21-10 08:03 PMLike 0 -

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com04-22-10 11:13 AMLike 0 - Ok, the difference between the Storm and the Curve, was that the Curve was THE Blackberry. Like when people thought of a BlackBerry, they thought of a Curve (during it's lifetime) it's the best selling BB, the best selling phone (line) in North America.
When people think of the Storm, they picture a drunken guy that stumbled in, had a sip of beer, vomited all over the door, passed out, and woke up slowly piecing back together what happened while profusely apologizing. I understand the progression of equipment and software. And I understand that as equipment gets obsolete further development on older models is curtailed in the name of progress. However, I will not purchase another BB product. NOT because this phone will not run 6.0, but because RIM sold me this mediocrity that they knew was sub par. Then took a year to make it even usable to the level it was advertised. I stress "USABLE", because it sure is not good. The company knew what they were doing and chose to disrespect the market they were courting. This thing is Ford Pinto dreaming it was a Toyota. To me RIM is synonymous with the Storm 1 and that's enough for me.04-22-10 02:16 PMLike 0 -

Always remember, there were satisfied Pinto owners also. But anyone looking back and comparing it to world auto products of the period can see it for what it was. (of course we cannot include eastern bloc vehicles. They were on par with the Pinto.)04-24-10 01:49 PMLike 0 - I understand technology advancement and actually appreciate it. I have come to grips with my Storm 1 never quite being the phone it was supposed to be. My question is this... How much better is the Storm 2 than the S1? I mean, I have 6 apps loaded and my S1 keeps crying foul and asking me to free up app memory. I was blaming it on the pushed content but I guess that is only installation links. But if the S2 has twice as much app memory as the S1, does that mean I will be allowed to load 12 apps instead of 6? Big freaking deal.
I am still a ways away from being able to upgrade my S1 since I have only had it for a year. But I certainly do not want to upgrade to the S2 if I am going to have phone envy while looking at the iPhone or Droid.
Why can't we access the memory card for applications? It seems to be a no brainer fix for our memory issues. But I am not a programmer and do not understand the fancy new technologies. I am just an unfrozen caveman lawyer.
Will RIM go the way of the Commodore? I mean the Amiga was a great computer, better than what Apple and IBM were at the time. But the took care of their customers the way RIM takes care of us and it was the users that kept it afloat (just like Crackberry).04-24-10 02:46 PMLike 0 - i have over 100 apps installed, i had over 60 installed on my storm 1 probably and never had memory problems really04-24-10 03:40 PMLike 0
- @corpsman - just sit back and see what's avail when your time comes. You never know what RIM will do.
@howarmart- how muxh mem did you have left in S1?
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com04-24-10 04:11 PMLike 0 - booted with 25ish and it hovered between 20-25 mbs with use normally
granted app size ranged from a couple kbs to over 2 mbs. But i was going off my excel list that i have to keep track of the apps, codes and the install link04-24-10 04:18 PMLike 0 - What's this about cars?
Swooooooooosh! Over my head!
Frick guys, I live in South Africa... We're lucky to have the wheel.
My Storm does, and alwayz will, kick arse!
I've gone Black, and I'm not going back.
If there's no upgrades tough! Ill upgrade to the latest and greatest in 1.5 years.
PS: if this was a nokia your camera would be like 2 MP smaller, and all types of other "software issues". Why does the BB have to keep up when other phones don't (including symbian)
