Not receiving folderized messages from OWA via BIS
- Ok so I've tried to do a bit of searching and I think I have a solution that will fix my problem but I'd like to ask and see if someone knows how I might fix this in a better way that I plan to at the moment.
Ok so I have an exchange server at work and I'm not on the BES. We do however have OWA and so I use BIS to connect to our OWA portal and have mail forwarded that way.
I have my inbox sorted by recipient for some important individuals. So if person X sends me an email it goes into a folder under by inbox that is titled X. Same for person Y and so on. I do this sorting with server side rules that I have created in MS Outlook. This allows me to see my emails sorted into these folders when using the OWA portal.
So when I get an email from people that I don't do this for it forwards the email just fine. However when I get an email from one of these people the message never gets forwarded to my BB.
Is there a way for me to get BIS to handle that? Currently I feel my only option is that I have to change my rules so that they are client-only rules that only occur on my workstation. That way when BIS checks it should see it in the inbox folder and then forward it but on my workstation things will still be sorted out into separate folders.
Perhaps its time I ditch this method and start using the outlook search function (like I do on my linux box at home) but Outlook is SO SLOW at searching it pretty much makes me want to tear my hair out while waiting. Even just resorting the messages by recipient takes it a good damn long time and this is on a 3Ghz dual core machine with 4 gigs of RAM.
Any tips or thoughts on how to solve the issues (other than using BES) is greatly appreciated.02-03-09 08:55 PMLike 0 - And you're not going to. Only "new" messages in your inbox will come to your BB. If you want full folder sync you'll need BES.
Also, if you reroute messages to folder via rules like you're doing now, you'll probably miss some with BIS.02-03-09 09:09 PMLike 0 - Yes, that's why you don't have a Sent folder, but BIS will save Sent items on the handheld and also in the Sent Items folder on the BIS account tied into it... i.e. Exchange.02-04-09 07:33 PMLike 0
- French or Civic, how do you setup "Client Only" rules that would allow all of the emails to get to your BB? I am running into the same problem as French. Our IT Department just decided to do away with the POP3 email and go with the Exchange Server and it sucks. Thanks.02-05-09 08:47 AMLike 0
- Unfortunatly with OWA/BIS you need to leave your email alone when it comes to your Inbox. Get rid of your incoming email rules that file your email for you. You'll need to do that yourself. Otherwise, the only thing you could do is set a forward to your BIS created email account on the Blackberry, but that's nasty and would cause you to lose the ability to have your sent items go into the Sent Items folder in the Exchange mailbox.02-05-09 09:45 AMLike 0
- Civic, just to make sure I have this straight, there are 2 options:
1. I can leave it as is with BIS and OWA, and if I have any rules set up to file messages into specific folder, I will not receive those on my BB
0r
2. I can have IT create a rule on the server to forward my emails to my vzw.blackberry.net email address. THen I would get all my emails (even those that get filed into folders in OUtlook). But I would lose the ability to have my emails sent from my BB to appear in my outlook sent folder.
I'm also under the impression that with BIS and OWA that there is a 15 minute delay in receiving emails, but with the forwarding to my vzw.blackberry.net the emails would be pushed immediately.
Thoughts?02-05-09 10:09 AMLike 0 - For a while I used both a redirect/forward* from exchange to my blackberry.net address, as well OWA/BIS mailbox access. I've went back to using only the redirect. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
If you redirect everything, it comes in instantly. I'll see it on my phone before it shows up on my desktop client. Also, you get ALL your emails, regardless** of any rules you set up for filtering into folders. On the other hand, when you reply to something, it shows up as "From" your blackberry and not your work email. Also, sent items don't sync back up with your Exchange sent items. You cannot access subfolders.
*If you simply forward all emails, everything coming into your BB will show as "from" you at your work email address. The better solution is to set up a redirect rule, that keeps the original sender information intact.
** It's possible, if you want, to not receive specific emails, with the checkbox "do not process other rules after this one" -- so you can have a rule that does something to the incoming email, but then the redirect rule is NOT processed. Again, this is just something you can do if you have a reason/want to.
For me, receiving the emails to read them quickly was the most important part. Replying to emails from my phone is rare. So that's why I continue to use the redirect rule.02-05-09 10:29 AMLike 0 - Actually it appears that you can go into your settings on the BIS site and choose the "Reply To" field and that will in effect mask your emails you send. Making them look as if they are coming from your work email instead of your blackberry.net email address. Unless I am missing something02-05-09 10:39 AMLike 0

You are correct on all accounts.02-05-09 10:52 AMLike 0 - I've not yet tried this but if you check the box that says "only on this machine" then you can sort things into folders but it will only do this "client side" in your Outlook implementation. I'm not 100% certain this will work but it shows good promise. I've just been going a mile a minute at work lately with actually having to work. Man the nerve of these people expecting results from me! Anyway thats my idea. Now go try that for me and report back!! Just kidding. But if you do give it a try let me know!02-06-09 01:10 AMLike 0
