You have to be in a 1XEV coverage area. I'm only on a 1X myself and its irritating

Precisely! If it says 1XEV you are in 3G coverage if it says 1V you only have 2G. This is only if you are on verizon though.

I think you meant 1X but yes exactly right

Now it does matter if it says 1XEV or 1xev. I can't remember what the difference is right this second, and I don't want to mislead you, but if you search the forums, you'll find the answer.

The 3G symbol exists for use on GSM networks (Verizon is CDMA). You'd use a GSM network if you were abroad, or had your Storm unlocked and running on a GSM carrier in the US. If you use Verizon and are in the US, you shouldn't see a 3G.

You are right that it matters if you are on 1XEV or 1xev. This is two of the four different things that can show on you BB. The symbols tells you whether you're connected at EVDO speeds or not (x vs xev) and whether or not you're connected to the Blackberry data network (X vs XEV). The capital letters indicate if you're on the Blackberry data network and the lettering indicates network connection on the Verizon network. To simplify things, here is the different symbols you can get.

    1xev means EVDO Speed
    1x means Voice data
1XEV means EVDO Speed and BB Data
1X means Voice data and BB Data
