New Browser for Storm
-
- I'm beta testing it now. I don't think it has tabs.
So far it's very Opera Mini like but still suffering from Beta issues.
As an example, I'm not sure if this browser caches anything. Even changing screen orientations causes a reload of the website and you know how touchy the Storm's accelerometer can be.
Some initial impressions:
1. XXLarge magnification is still too small.
2. Screen drag lags a bit and needs to be smoother.
3. Although it has a mouse pointer it doesn't drag around so it really only pops up where you point your finger. This presents the same problem as OM where it's very hard to go to the next page of a forum thread because the numbers are so small.
4. Load times are much faster than BB browser(as expected) but not as fast as OM in my estimation. Lack of caching is a problem in this regard too.
5. No Surepress support.
6. Split screen seems cool. Not sure how much I would use it but it currently lags horribly.
My 10 minute assessment is that the browser has potential. I would like to see it support the Storm a little more and we'll see how it ranks against OM and I suppose Firefox when it's out of beta.
Unfortunately, IMHO, the existing BB Browser is the most user friendly on the Storm(I know it's the only one made for the Storm), but the extremely long rendering time makes it a pain to use.01-16-09 07:57 PMLike 0 - Not working for me after download, not sure if it is my settings though. I have vzw bez set up but I have application permissions allowed. It installed fine with unsigned version. App opens but when I enter in URL nothing happens. After I txt in the url and hit menu, then "go", it will go back to homepage with the website in the top address bar but nothing happens. Please help. Upon opening app I did allow it to use that other website to function...so that is not the problem??01-16-09 08:08 PMLike 0
- It is darn fast and cannot wait for them to improve upon this beta and hopefully make one that utilizes and takes advantage of the Storms UI (I sent an email to Bolt asking them if they were going to do this)01-16-09 08:19 PMLike 0
- Well I'm on it now so it does work. Being a beta I try not to be too harsh.
Lack of zoom is annoying.
Address input is odd and not friendly.
Renders pages quicker but lack of cache makes it take longer to go back a page.
With some added functionality like surepress and tabs and storm specific updates it will be a great browser worthy of a few bucks.
So if you like to try new things grab a beta copy and provide your feedback to help the company progress.

Opened BOLT, it prompts me with "The application BOLT has attempted to access us.mysmallplanet.com. Would you like to allow this? Y/N." I click Yes, it opens the browser. All I see is the address bar, History/Favorites/Feeds tabs & Tell a friend icon.
I click on address and type in any URL/Menu/Go and it starts to download the page (as seen by activity in the top right corner) and then just stops. Nothing happens, back at homepage.
A lot of you state that you have it running on your Storm. Can anyone help? Is it a setting on mine? BB Browser is set to Internet Browser and functions w/out any problems.

Hmm. Mine did this when I tried to go to citi website. I closed out the program and tried crackberry and it worked fine. Am back on bb browser now but will try bolt now to see what it does.

We don't know anything about security on this app and certainly not something you should blindly trust. Just a word of warning... be careful out there.01-16-09 10:33 PMLike 0

I'm not a big fan of the split screen feature and I agree with others than XXL is still too small for some pages.
I'd like to see flash support, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
BOLT doesn't seem to be able to scroll a window within the browser (picture in picture windows)
I DO however like the ability to view websites, not just mobile sites; ex: CrackBerry
The mouse style pointer is basically useless since it doesn't follow your finger. Instead it just rests where you tap & tapping on some sites isn't very easy or responsive01-16-09 10:54 PMLike 0 -
This is from their webpage FAQ's
SECURITY
What security features does BOLT include?
Security features in BOLT include:
128-bit secure (SSL) Connection:
BOLT uses an encrypted protocol called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to access secure Web pages.
Filtering:
Server filter protects you from spyware, malicious or faulty add-ons, online fraud and spoof Web sites. The BOLT server acts as a filter that protects you against common threats, such as spyware or other types of malware, when browsing the Web.
Certificate error notification:
A certificate is an electronic document that can help identify a Web site's owner and can help you make decisions about trusting the site with personal or financial information. BOLT warns about certificate error when there is a problem with a certificate or the server's use of the certificate.
Pop-up Blocker:
A mechanism that provides you with a choice to view or block pop-up windows.
Does BOLT support encrypted connections?
Yes. When you connect to an ecommerce site, such as ebay or amazon.com, BOLT employs a secure connection that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to encrypt the transaction between the BOLT server and the web

Some extra's by me:
- The icon is **** ugly. I think it should be much smaller, and smoother shaped.
- Flash doesn't seem to work because it doesn't support the format
- The back button doesn't seem to work, and instead you have to press the menu button first, then back. My biggest complaint...
- We are a touch screen phone, so we don't have a keypad! But all the shortcuts are keypad shortcuts so....I think you get it
- The menu button is used way too much
Very fast, and smooth rendering though. Will probably use it as my default browser for a little bit. Might try opera as well.01-17-09 03:06 AMLike 0
