It's the gap that the clip on the holster fits into so the phone doesn't fall out.

I call that hole the "no no spot". Much the same as the female "no no spot"... Steer clear of it, or you're sleeping on the couch.

I've read up on this before and it does seem that a holster can fit into it. But if you look carefully you can see mesh work. So is it a speaker?

Well apparently it is some sort of speaker/receiver thing just like the mic at the bottom. Difference is that it listens to the background noise will on the phone and filters it out from what is coming from the mic at the bottom.

Hence a lot of people are still able to hear you even though you think you are in a loud place. Try it out for yourself! Play some music really loud (not stupidly loud) or something and see if the other person on the phone can hear you.

Can't remember what site I read this on by the way.

Then why does my case have a cutout around that hole? It looks like another speaker of some sort.

Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of it, but that hole leads to a little metal box of some sort. It doesn't look like a speaker to me, but I have no idea what it is. The box is probably 1/2" x 3/8" by 3/16" and it fits into an opening in the trim bezel piece. Maybe it's the microphone for when using speakerphone or recording video/voice notes? I wouldn't think the microphone would be that big, but it could be contained within other related circuits as part of that little box.

I have an otterbox case (about to be returned, but that's a different thread) -- the oppening otterbox made for the caller's mic is the same as the hole they made for this mystery hole. Seems right that it is a background mic.

This hole picks up ambient sounds to reduce background noise, works as a noise reduction/cancellation for the phone when on calls.

    what bryant said!
it is a second mic. it "hears" backgound noise and the main mic at the bottom of the phone picks up your voice and the background noise. Then the phone filters out what is your voice and what is background noise.

Test it out... turn on background music and call someone. ask them and they will say the music is barely noticeable.

however in quiet situations its VERY BUGGY.

+1. You can try out the difference by covering the hole with your finger while you're talking to someone in a noisy environment. The person on the other line should hear a noticeable difference.

I experience the same as xxraffy... in quiet conditions the cancellation negatively affects voice quality.
