It's a fact of life.
Take a look at the threads in the Storm Owners Lounge. There are a couple that have covered this recently.
tons of threads on muffled sound. remember, though, that the mic for your voice is at the very bottom.
by holding the phone between face and shoulder, you could easily cover it.
the problem is not your storm, it's you.
this will happen with any phone if you do the face/shoulder hold.
I'm not sure about this. I've tried a few things here because my customers have been asking me to repeat things more often since moving to .109. This is my thought from the experiments I've conducted.
While the phone is being held to the ear with the left hand, the accelerometer is telling the phone to 'muffle' the sound. I am holding the phone correctly and the mic has a clean unobstructed view of my mouth. Holding the phone in the same position with my right hand, call is clear.
I understand the shoulder/face argument, but I don't believe this is the issue. I've not had any issues with this until .109. Love the OS, but have to remember to use right hand only.
This is not your fault! this is the phones problem.
It has a noise cancellation feature (filter out background noise so they could hear your voice better) its a technology adopted from bluetooth headphones. The problem is when your in a quiet room the phone "thinks" your voice is the background so it filters (make you sound muffled) out your own voice.
its a great feature, but they need to give us a way to turn it on and off.
Try this test when you are talking on the phone and someone is complaining about your voice sounding muffled, quickly put the phone into speaker and ask if you sound better. The reason for that is the phone is into speaker mode the noise cancellation it turned off.
Ye it is not me. I have had the phone for three months. It is only happening with my nw replacement phone.
Actually its a combination of both You and the handset. The chin/shoulder...never a good idea with flip phones for fear of breaking the little rod that joins them...touch screen phone? thats a negative as well...you cant gage the pressure your applying to the screen and your covering the mouth piece and theres a big possibility that the noise reduction/cancellation feature is doing exactly what the gentleman said b4 me.
I have yet to be told my voice sounds muffled
so you fail.
and stop yelling.
Where in the Strom Owners Lounge do you find these threads?
I didn't want to come off angry, but more towards emphasize that the problem is the poor phone call quality on the Storm. There have been several threads repeated over and over about callers complaining of muffled sound.
Send an email to RIM [email protected] if you have this problem.
This is a common problem
this is about 1/2 of the threads about crappy mic problems

I just hope this is something that can be fixed with an update
I had the exact same problem.......everyone I talked to said they couldn't understand me. So, I called Verizon and had them send me a replacement phone less than a week after receiving the original. I still get some complaints but not as many. For a $500 phone, I better sound crystal freakin clear!
