Since the Storm is a bit of a radical departure from all other Blackberries before it, not all apps will necessarily work, so RIM included a compatibility mode that tries to make the Storm function more like a traditional Blackberry for that app. Doesn't always work, but sometimes it makes the difference between an app working or not.

Couldnt put it better myself. Basically it just tells the storm to install it regardless of weather it will work or not!
That depends on whether they are Storm specific or not. You can try with compatibility mode disabled and, if it works, bingo. If not, turn compatibility mode back on and continue to use apps that haven't been updated to work on the Storm.
oh so should i change all my apps to disable compatibility?
I'd try it on all apps, but some won't work without it if they were written for older BBs, so you may have to turn it back on. The nice thing is that you can do this on an app by app basis. So if an app works without it, great, otherwise you just turn compatibility mode back on for that app.
