Is it just me or does the Storm's reception suck?

Number 2. I thought Verizon unlocked the GPS on the BBs. When I try to find my location in BB Maps all I get is searching for satellites. I know it worked on my Curve.

1.- maybe you're in a bad reception area.
mine works pretty well even with 1 bar. No bars and then the call get's choppy

2.- make sure you have the GPS set to "location on"

home screen - options - advanced options - GPS - location on

    hope that helps

Where in the menu do I find the BB maps? And will I be charged extra for using them?

There is no extra charge for using the BB maps. It is in the applications folder. (or that's where mine is)

In case you didn't realize, you usually need to be outside to find the GPS satellites.

OK, I'm an *****. taking it outside worked. With my curve BB Maps worked by the window though.
