I got an xv6700 from a friend thus I was not able to put insurance on it through Verizon. A year later (last month to be exact when it happened) I dropped it and the screen went goodbye. No insurance so I am stuck using an old Env right now. Of course I am just waiting for the Storm to arrive

Point of the story. Insurance is needed for high tech devices!

I recommend getting insurance, but you can probably get it cheaper from a 3rd party insurer.

what's to prevent people from "losing" their phone, getting a new one from verizon for $50, then selling the old one on ebay?

ESN on the phone becomes blacklisted, so it can't be activated, only good for spare parts, then there's the whole insurance fraud crossing state lines criminal thing, that turns some folk off....
