I'm using a factory unlocked, Vodafone branded Storm 2 in South Africa which I got today Now, I'm new to this so I'm not sure which OS version I should update to. I'm currently using version 5.0.0.497. Can I update to any version? Is there a specific one that will be the best?

Should I use an official release or a hybrid OS version? Also can someone tell me the difference between a drm and non drm version?

    Thanks for the assistance!

If you didn't have too much issues getting everything to work on your unlocked device (service books, data, etc), then I'd also recommend .713.

believe .713 is the latest available for either the 9520 or 9550 (just make sure to download the correct one!). Info can be found here.

As far as hybrids go, if you're not fully comfortable with the whole OS upgrade process, I'd hold off on hybrids for right now, especially since "official" .713 seems to be pretty favorable with the masses.

Not sure about your DRM vs. non-DRM question...

EDIT: I'm still confused about DRM. some places say it's a radio file issue and others say (a popular BB forum) that it's to do with DRM music. ANYONE???

If your phone is a branded vodafone 9520 then most likely it is drm. That means that you can not just put a nodrm version os on it. It has to be a drm version and the drm version is rare. They do this to minimize leaks and the ability for you to put another carriers official release os on your phone. So 5.0.0.713 will not work for you if it is DRM. I believe the newest DRM version is .607 and you can get that here

According to my service provider, when I go to blackberry's website to downloads and then go to my service provider, the latest version I can download is 5.0.0.721

That is just the package version not the OS version. That OS that you are looking at is 5.0.0.436. You need to look at what the version is next to applications, not package. If your phone is DRM the newest is 5.0.0.607 at the link a couple posts up

I've never heard of a Vodafone vS2 that was nodrm, so I think your best best is .607, but it's not that great of an OS.

So is my current OS better then? (see first post) Or should I still update?
