When texting, on certain multitap devices, you can for example press the dot three times and a smiley as in :-) would appear. You can change that behaviour too.
Is that available on the BB or not? On the landscape keyboard there is room for some extra keys. Maybe a good idea to have some keys with characters or sentences that can be predefined by the user. Three should be a nice start. Maybe in a third party app if RIM doesn't have something like that build in?
You can use the autotext feature to create whatever substitutions you want. It'll basically 'listen' for the given text and replace it with whatever you wanted instead.

or, well, you get the idea...
Yep, if you go to options > autotext then hit the menu key and select new. You can create any shortcut you want, then when you text those shortcut letters and hit the space key it will show up.
