It depends on whether or not using are using the official rim/bb IM apps or going through the carrier's portal to get the apps. The apps from rim/bb all use data.

If you download directly from Blackberries website it is data, also there is a app called Beejive im not sure if its available for the storm though yet.

If you use verizon im app it counts as text msg.

Yea I'm wondering about that too. I don't to shell out extra money for txt messagrs if I don't need them. Extra thrity dollars and I only aend about 500 txt a month so no point of me getting it and I use messengrs a lot.

The only Instant Messanger programs that use SMS (text) are the ones from VZW. So she was correct in that regard.

You might want to try Instango. It's all data AND it combines all your IM clients in to 1.

The ONLY way texts will be used is if you are using the MOBILE IM suite that is offered by Verizon. This suite is not available on the Storm; the preloaded IM clients shipped with the storm all use data.

there are plans that do include unlimited messages. they are either select plans or nationwide email & messaging plan.

i just checked my ENTIRE SMS bill detail. i have NONE from 00000 or anything like that. i use the AIM and GOOGLE TALK app downloaded from blackberry.
