Nope, no way to change it aside from using a third party app for messaging.

You can try the Empower Threaded SMS app. Install the free trial of the app from http://www.getempower.com/ota
Empower SMS apps rock! And yes using an app like empower would be the only way to do it.

great!! the only issue my friend had, was the tone not working when he recieved a text...... i dont think he tried too hard to resolve it, but he was happy with it also!
does the empower app allow us to use more than 160 characters?

I have a Bold 9000 v5.0.0.662 - Have tried all of the other v5.0.0.XXX and the "Bubble" option on the SMS would never work...was never able to figure it out.
I found crunchSMS - free bubble threaded text messaging. Allows more than 160 characters. Works on 4.5 and higher (including 5.0)
