I use the month view in the calendar but have a hard time recognizing days with appointments. The date appears to change to bold for all day items and there appears to be marks for items in the day. Is there any way to create a more visible clue that there are appointments or all day events?

Not really. There are some 3rd party apps like Pocket Informant available that might have such options.
