- I was the one who started the thread on .86 being acceptable with a ?.
I installed the 86 OS 2 times with disastrous results. Once over .75 and once on a wipe and install. same results. At that time I started the other thread.
Since then this is what I did, used JL commander to wipe 2x. Then reinstalled .86 for a last shot. I cannot believe this. 86 is absolutly flawless! Besides the 2 known issues of the A2DP stereo and the LED lights screwed up but fixed by disabling the LED bluetooth notification. Every other thing on my Storm works perfectly. I cannot believe this. No crashes, no sim card error, no battery drain, all notifications working perfectly. If this was released with the 2 above fixes I would be happy as ****.
This is coming from a guy who was completely disgusted a few days earlier.
My question to CTX is this. How can an OS on the SAME phone be completely different? It seems that an OS install is very fineky and can make a difference of acceptable or not.
Anyone else have the same experiences????
Charlie C01-19-09 04:18 PMLike 0 - RIM has started (with the Storm) using the same NN (Neural Net) CPUs that have only been heard of in movies.... most notably the T-X from Terminator 3. Due to some design flaws in the CPU design, the Storm can be temperamental during certain days of the month.01-19-09 04:36 PMLike 0

- Haven't experienced it because other than the A2DP & LED issue, I haven't had a problem with .86.
I just wiped and reinstalled .86 earlier on a lark earlier today. Wanted to load the OS on when the phone recognized itself as fully charged. Gonna see if it makes any difference with anything01-19-09 04:42 PMLike 0 -
I thought it was because users were using incorrect "mind meld" techniques with their devices ......
Suppose you learn something new here hey !
EDIT : On a serious note, this amount of discrepancies in OSs is unbelievable, and being from Networking IT Background I can not see any rational reason for it !Last edited by Ash_786; 01-19-09 at 05:32 PM.

.86 has been stable for me until something outside influences it. Like me trying to force GSM mode without a sim card installed in it or me trying to play a DRM protected video uploaded to it using the software included on the DVD (AvP Requiem). Both times, locked solid requiring a battery pull. Other than those 2 times, my phone has never been anything but On. No reboots, no freezes, no nothing.
Each OS I've backed up my handheld's 3rd party apps, synced my contacts via DM, wiped the handheld and installed the OS using loader.exe instead of DM. But I have not restored the handheld from backup. I reload the 3rd party apps through DM and sync my contacts to get them back. Restoring my desktop preferences by hand takes a bit but I prefer it to possibly restoring a bad database file. So far, it's worked for me.01-19-09 06:22 PMLike 0 -
There is no rational reason an OS should go from unstable to stable on the same device unless something about the device or the install process is different. There is no rational reason an OS should be unstable on one device and stable on another unless something about the devices or the install process is different between the two devices.
But seeing how you prefer jokes to logical examinations of what's going on in order to find the common denominators and improving everyone's experience, I'll shut up now and keep my Storm working just fine... As it has since 11/2201-19-09 06:55 PMLike 0 - I don't think you understand the definition of Blackmail. What exactly does RIM have against you as evidence that you don't want made public in return for your BETA testing of the device? Hummmm?01-19-09 06:58 PMLike 0
- The only true way to tell if the phones are really "coo-coo" is to create a sequence of steps that everyone should follow for the next update. Once the update has been done, no one should restore from a backup and see how the phone reacts. I am hoping this experience should be the same should everyone follow a set of agreed to steps(need to be created).
I propose the following steps:
Wipe storm using the jl_loader (spelling).
Update the OS
Test it out for a day
Restore from backup and see if that changes things.
Just a thought. What does the consensus think?01-19-09 08:32 PMLike 0 - Next thing, we're going to be checking the date codes for the manufacturing date and checking their biorhythms.
Seriously, any OS upgrade is supposed to "wipe" the system, and the day it's done can't possibly have any influence on the system.
I'm up for any LOGICAL explanation of why reinstalling .86 after a "wipe" or 2 would work better, especially on the day of the month...01-19-09 08:52 PMLike 0 - Yes agreed, the update "should" do that, being that these are unofficial, we can at least try to get some consistency with the loading of the OS. It was just a thought.01-19-09 08:57 PMLike 0
- Funny thing about the storm is just when you think it's running smooth and it could be a day or two or a week it will decide to prove you wrong and randomly reboot or the backlight won't turn off or insert your own issue.. Using this phone can be like walking on egg shells.01-19-09 09:17 PMLike 0
