I am looking to buy a unlocked storm and i was wondering which model would allow me to go on 3G with AT&T the 9500 or the 9530? also would i be able to use GPS on an unlocked Storm? cause i heard verizon disables the GPS even if its unlocked

AT&T 3G: Not in the US, no. The Storm's GSM 3G radio doesn't have the frequencies to use AT&T's North American 3G.

GPS: Don't quote me on this one, but the GPS for the Storm isn't locked down anyway - I'm on Verizon, my Storm isn't unlocked, and I don't pay for VZ Navigator, and I can utilize the GPS in BlackBerry Maps or Google Maps to my heart's content. Which leads me to believe you should be fine running the GPS on an unlocked phone.

GPS has never been locked on the Storm, and whoever told you Verizon disables it lied to you .

The Storm 9500 is able to support European 3G networks. An unlocked storm 9500 is NOT able to support 3G on ATT's network.

I'm under the assupmtion that an unlocked 9530 should be able to support 3G in the US.

Incorrect. The 9530 has the same GSM radio as the 9500, the 9500 just lacks a CDMA radio. You can not use a 9530 on ATT or any other US 3G network. You can use the EDGE network though.

The storm supports the following bands:

* UMTS/HSPA: 2100 MHz ---- (The storm would need to have the UTMS 850,1900MHz band to support ATT's 3G network, or 1700MHz to support T-Mobile's)
* North America: 850 MHz GSM�/GPRS networks
* North America: 1900MHz GSM/GPRS networks
* Europe/Asia Pacific: 1800MHz GSM/GPRS networks
* Europe/Asia Pacific: 900MHz GSM/GPRS networks
* Dual-Band: 800/1900 MHz CDMA/Ev-DO networks

The person above me is correct.
Even with the proper service books installed, the phone will only pick up EDGE.
I'm running a 9530 on AT&T and it's not so bad... Other than the fact that I can't use any apps that use APN....

I thought i trick AT&T and i called support asking to see if i could get 3G working and after i they found out i was on an "unbranded" device they said they could do nothing. If the 9530 can get on AT&T's 3G, how would one know?

vic, you enter the TCP settings? I did and i havent had any issues, i get a constant EDGE connection with .148 OS, .132 radio and the connection set to 2G instead of 2G & 3G.

This is perfectly correct. The 9500/9530 3G frequency is 2100 whereas the AT&T 3G frequencies are 850 and 1900. However, Tmo's 3G frequency is 2100 which means that those of you on Tmo can use the 3G functionality of the Storms.

*EDIT* - Apparently Tmo has both 1700 (see arcanexvi's post below) and 2100 depending on the area...so depends where you are I guess.

Thank you Arcanexvi for such an informative post. That is the exact reason why i was under the assumption the 9530 should work with ATT's 3G network. I am positive the 9500 will only pick up EDGE but it would seem otherwise with the 9530...
