Delete unneeded applications and messages (especially messages).

This may have been covered but I cannot stress how much faster my phone is after I cleared off my messages and SMS texts.

This is all while having VZ Navigator and Visual Voicemail on my phone.

Just like any other blackberry, deleting messages definitely improves the performance tenfold.

In Messages > Options > General Options:

Under Keep Messages, set it to a range that is appropriate for you if you'd like for it to to this automatically.

Mine is set to 30 days but I will still manually delete as needed.

SMS don't actually take up too much space, if you see a noticable increase in speed after deleting them, you should check out the memory opt in my signature. Go through that and delete some real memory hogs..

It was definitely more the e-mail messages than the SMS texts. But it was a major improvement nonetheless.
