Canada Hot Stocks: CanWest, Research In Motion, Compton, ARC Energy

    Oct 31, 2008 11:00:00 (ET)

Among the companies whose shares are making notable moves in Friday's session are CanWest Global Communications Corp. (CGS.T), Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM), Compton Petroleum Corp. (CMZ) and ARC Energy Trust (AET.UN.T).

CanWest (C$0.95, -C$0.07, -6.7%) said it's disappointed with the new CRTC policy framework, specifically the regulator's rejection of fee-for-carriage. Analysts at Genuity said they believed CanWest had the most to gain from a revision to the framework, but "as we suspected, they came away with crumbs."

Vodafone (VOD) is giving away Research In Motion's ($49.94, C$2.55, 5.4%) BlackBerry Storm in the U.K. for free with an 18-month contract, according to data on Vodafone's Web site. Vodaphone is aiming to deliver the Storm to those that pre-order by Nov. 11, well ahead of the holiday season.

Compton Petroleum (C$2.65, -C$0.07, -15%) said its previously announced sales process has been terminated and it will focus on operating as an independent company.

ARC Energy (C$17.45, C$1.30, 8.1%) announced a "significant" increase in Montney reserves and land valuations. It also announced a C$585 million capital budget for 2009, including an accelerated development plan for its Dawson property.

I'm not all too surprised by that. I don't know how cell phone pricing usually goes in the UK or in Europe as a whole, but T-Mobile Germany was pricing the iPhone at 1 euro if you signed a sufficiently priced contract.

you need to maintain a monthly bill of 40 for 18 months for it to be free.
but yeah that practice happens often across the pond. it doesn't seem to jive with any of the N.American carriers though, which stinks because i'm paying well over $150 a month.
