I don't know why it is so hard to understand the problem here. There IS a problem with SOME phones that were released. I was one of the "lucky" ones that got stuck with an old rev of the screen plate. I dunno if i'm the only one that realizes this, but hopefully this will shed some light on the issues we've been having.
First! How to fix it temporarily until you get verizon to replace it:
Currently I am using two cardboard pieces cut out in the size of the battery from a cereal box. It seems to work well thickness wise. I have placed them over the battery between the back cover and battery. NOT UNDER THE BATTERY AS SHOWN IN OTHER POSTS! That is WRONG and will mess things up for sure. I'm not saying that this method is any safer or wont harm the phone. But, i have been using this "fix" for a few days now with NO problems. Again just cut out two pieces of cardboard from a cereal box in the shape of the battery and thats all. Take care when closing the lid. Mine buldges out a hair, but it seems to have no ill affects.
Next! The problem with the screen metal backplate. There are two different versions floating around and that is the cause of all these problems with not being able to click around the edges.
Look at the difference in the green circled areas. I'm sure there are more differences ESPECIALLY with the dome in the center, but i do not have pictures of that. You can see how there are rounded areas on the newer one rather than sharp 90 degree corners. This allows more material to support the screen and is more rigid. I think the newer one is thicker too. After comparing in the store with the demos which were the "new" rev, there is a BIGGG DIFFERENCE and there IS INDEED a problem with the ones that do not click around the edges! If anyone wants to take theirs apart to compare and post pics that would help clear things up even more.
Mine doesnt have any clicking issues at all. Also, my box didnt have a second layer of labels with a different version number on it.
Mine does not have the second layer of labels either, yet i still have the clicking problem. On the label, near the bottom it shows the "model number" i believe the one in the store had a different number than mine. I had the vz guy in the store with a demo pull his battery cover off to i could check the label and compare with mine...looks like everything is the same except for the model number. Can anyone confirm? I was in a hurry so i didnt get a chance to take down the number.
guys i am having this same issue with mine. If i turn the phone so the physical keys(red phone, green phone etc) are to the right in qwerty mode the a is ESPECIALLY hard to press. I like the phone but this kinda sucks when typing messages. My battery seems to go down by like 5% every half hour too
screen will always wiggle a little.. its a huge button that has to always be able to shift when clicking. of course some might be more than others but there is always a wiggle
MerlynNY: Can you keep your current storm until the new one comes or do you have to ship back the one you have now?
Yes, most certainly. The Verizon Tech rep I spoke to searched for any documentation on this problem, and once he could not find anything, he told me he was going to have a new phone shipped to me by December 15th, and once I received that I was to take the pre-paid package slip send the old phone back (box and all) to Verizon.
I was also informed not to cut out the CPU code or anything on the box to send in for a rebate. I was told to hold off on sending in the rebate and to use the new box CPU if necessary (don't know why, but I'll wait...).
I'm guessing not too many folks are calling in on this if the Verizon Rep looked for documentation of this problem and turned up nothing. He could have been jerking me around, but I didn't get that feeling, and he searched for quite a while.
If more folks are having this issue, then they should certainly call in and get a new phone.
This is certainly interesting. I doesn't immediately seem like the extra material would increase the stiffness of the device. Perhaps I will do some FEA analysis on a mockup a little later.
