    it wont work, the computer will recognize what phone you have from the ESN and such. This isnt the 80's, computers are rather smart now...

    Its not required for ANY carrier if you are activating without a contract.

    That's how the carriers are able to dictate it. Contractually required.

    Good to know. I wasnt going to speak about other carriers since I have only had ATT with my smartphones. Thats why I only talked about ATT so I couldnt get myself into trouble.

    AFAIK, the ESN of the phone identifies its model. So unless you change the ESN of the phone (highly illegal), the system will know what kind of phone you have, without asking you.

    I thought RIM has always had a contractual deal that required VZW to put BBs on either BIS or BES. This is different from other smart phones, where the data plan was up to the provider.
