Stop trying to spell the word and just type it out. Hit the key the contains the letter you want, and it will make a best guess on what you wanted based on its internal dictionaries and its "learning" of what you type.
Don't look at the screen, just type away as you would a full QWERTY keyboard. Take a look after you're done your sentence, you'll be amazed at the result. It's probably about 90-95% accurate. Email addresses and strange words will trip it up, but it's fine for banging out quick emails or text messages.
