My god, it said glass in the Press Release. Press releases are not technical articles, they're mean't to be read by the media and others who are basically laymen. If the media and the laymen read "large (3.25) glass lens", they're going to expect the shiny part on the front that they touch with their fingers to be glass. If it's not true to the press release RIM will take a flogging for it, and I don't think they would let a gaffe like that slip through undetected.

And even without that definition, Civic himself posted a picture in which the top layer of the capacitive display is labeled "LENS/CASING," and he did not at all dispute that the top layer can be called a lens. Clearly he thinks it's appropriate, or at the very least, Synaptics believes it is.

i will not get into a semantics argument, but from a logical standpoint there is really no reason for rim to refer to the screen as a lens in their press release to the general public who has zero clue who synaptics is or what touch sensors are. its obviously a typo.

Use a Descriptive Title
This rule is simple; help us to help you. When you create your thread / post, think of it as if 'somone else' is reading it. With that in mind, make your subject lines related to the content of your post. Having a subject line of 'help' or 'now what', will not really help others later when they do a search for a particular issue. So, try to be a little more creative. Example: “My Pearl will not show myFaves icons” or “How do I use BB Maps on my 8100”

Foul language
Please keep posts and links family appropriate. The administrator’s and moderator’s reserve the right to delete posts at their discretion if they are deemed inappropriate or offensive. Why is that? Just because you don't use it to recognize your touch doesn't mean it's not a lens.

Take this, from Blackberry's site about the Bold:

Seeing as how the Bold isn't a touchscreen device at all, the top layer of the screen plays no role in touch recognition whatsoever. Yet it's still a lens. Maybe it's not how any of us might intuitively use the word, but it's clearly how RIM applies the terminology as far as their phones are concerned.

If the screen is glass then it couldnt really flex like that from a soft touch. My guess it is something to do with the software and not the hardware.

It's hardware not software.

They made the screen with thinner, lower quality piece that would flex and pressure the LCD display underneath. Definitely not intended by design. Most likely chosen to go this route for cost savings reasons.

except for the glaring fact that none of those links are press releases to the general public! or have you now changed your point to say that forum nerds and tech specs for replacement parts somehow equate to common people referring to a lcd screen as a lens. show me an apple, htc, lg, blackberry etc press release for a touchscreen phone that refers to the screen as a lens.

and for the super slow people, keep in mind that no where have i said that i think the screen is plastic or glass. i've simply stated that it was a typo in the rim press release. i sincerely hope/think it is glass because it would be incredibly stupid for rim to make the storm with a cheap plastic screen like a voyager or something.

Ugh!! Their is no way I'm going through all this and deleting each and every individual rude/ignorant/uncalled for post.

Some of you have managed to turn a GREAT thread into nothing but belligerent ranting and raving over whether or not the screen is glass or not and some of you just antagonized the whole situation by adding fuel to the fire.

Consider it closed cause some of you cannot play right..rather then PM's and warnings on how you all should behave, I'm closing this down.

Play nice or don't at all folks..if a thread like this happens again...PM's will be sent and warnings will be issued and followed up with bans if needed. Hate to be harsh, but seriously...thread went disgraceful awfully quick.
