    the 9500 has a 2100MHZ GSM 3G radio.

    AT&T uses 850MHZ/1900MHZ
    T-Mobile uses 1700MHZ

Therefore it is not compatible. 3G on the 9500 or the 9530 will NOT work on either AT&T, Rogers, T-Mobile, Fido, and other GSM carriers in NA.

The other reason why I ask is at mobile city online website the unlocked 9500 storm they r going to sell is att 3g compatible and they list the above 3g freq...so is that a typo on their part??

I suppose you looked HERE but yes. Originally the 9500 was going to have a triband HSPA radio, but that changed and only supports 2100MHz. It's a typo.

actually, the EDGE on the Storm is NOT garbage.

After upgrading to 4.7.0.78 on my 9500, the browser and the speed of the data transmission has improved to the point where I am now surfing almost as much as I did on my Bold on 3G.

Edge is slow.... Regardless of doing bold 3g vs storm edge.. Bold 3g isn't that fast either well at least not on at&t
