Im new to GSM, I know the CDMA side.
If I unlock the unit can I use any carriers SIM card?
I plan on being south of Cancun, Mexico all of February and planned on buying a Movistar or Telmex GSM SIm card, can I pop it in and use the GSM side of the Storm.

Im not to sure about Movistar-
But for Tmobile or AT&T you can pop in a SIM after unlocking the Storm.

I picked up my Storm on 11/29, unlocked it on the 30th, and took it to the Philippines for 3 weeks. Put in a Smart card there locally and it worked awesome. Never tried to use data, though...just needed it for calls/txts.01-06-09 12:36 AMLike 0 -

I called verizon to unlock my phone and they said that they would not do it because it would void my warranty. Grrr.

That's complete BS. Call Verizon, ask for global support. As long as you have an account in good standing and have been a customer for >60 days, they will give you an unlock code.

It frustrates me at how many customer service reps confuse this feature and misinform customers about it. The International Dial Value Plan feature has absolutely no effect on the roaming rate you pay when you travel outside the country...it only reduces the costs of calls to other countries from within the United States.02-05-09 08:24 PMLike 0 -

International calling is more expensive than getting a pre paid sim card from the country you are visiting. Just contact Global Support and tell them you are travelling to England and you need your phone unlocked. Even if you don't have 60 days good standing, tell them that's the reason you bought the storm and you are leaving for a business trip TOMORROW. They will do it.02-05-09 08:35 PMLike 0 -

I am headed overseas next week, and I just called up VZ and said I was going and wanted to use a pp sim.. They transferred me to a specialist, and he had me enter some data into the phone ad it unlocked. I have heard you need to be on the plan for at least 2 months.. I don�t know anything about that, but I have been a customer for 9 years..

I was a Verizon customer for about a year - had the Storm for a month - just called Global Support, told them I'd be going 'home' for a vacation and want to use a Vodafone SIM - there was absolutely no problem at all.

To the OP's question - yes, you should be able to use SIM cards from other carriers, but having never specifically tested Movistar or Telmex, I couldn't say for certain. Per a previous posters comment, I would recommend calling ACS before you travel to see if they have any sort of 'International' plan or reciprocal agreements with the chaps in Mexico!

Many people have asked if when they unlock their phone, using the steps outlined elsewhere, from Verizon Global Support, will it work on other GSM carriers overseas.
I just returned from southern Africa. Bought sim cards in both South Africa and Namibia, placed them in the Storm as appropriate. Phone worked just fine. I did not purchase a data plan in either place so did not test this.

I have been to Rocky Point many times with multiple verizon phones. Did not work at all. I have a storm and after reading this thread I decided to unlock mine with the hopes of using it on either MovieStar or Telcel.
I would also like to know how to get a hold of a prepaid sim when Im down there. The last time I went we were going to try it in one of my friends ATT phones which was not unlocked (newbie I know) and they would not sell me just the sim card. They said the only way I could get one was to buy a whole phone from them. What a waste of a hundred bucks.
