Security/Memory Cleaning Setting
- I was running through some screens and settings.
I'm at .85 and really don't have any problems per se and
the my phone use for the functions I use are good.
I went into Options, Security, Memory Cleaning
This was turned off (I have not touched this Ever)
and have reloaded each 'leak' as they arrived. So i take it
this would be a default setting,
This doesn't seem to be right
At first glance i would think one would want this active
There are various settings for cleaning.. can one of the OS
experts enlighten me on why/whynot this should/shouldn't
be enabled ???
I enabled it, then locked my phone to start it, phone rebooted
and now back up.. I have the 'defaults cleaning' set
Status = Enabled
in holster = yes
clean when idle = yes
idle timeout = 5 mins
show icon = no01-09-09 01:22 PMLike 0 - This is why I rarely post, most info is already there, I'll append what I found
in another forum for others.. but I still would like some feedback on why
'Enabled' wouldn't be the default... perhaps someone can whip up a mem util
app that displayed used mem on the screen... then we can more easily verify
what seems to eat it up, i'm usually 30-40m free anyway.
I've copied the document here for reference, but it's easier to just click the link.
Handheld Memory Cleaner
Your handheld's memory can contain sensitive information such as passwords, email message bodies, and private keys. To eliminate the risk of that information being compromised, BlackBerry supports a feature called Memory Cleaner. The Memory Cleaner has two main functions:
1. Secure Garbage Collection
2. Clearing Caches
Secure Garbage Collection
All Java objects are stored on the handheld in RAM or flash memory. Normally, when a Java object is no longer needed, the memory assigned to that object is released to be overwritten by new data. When Memory Cleaner is enabled, the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) overwrites the memory using zeroes before it is released. As a result, there is no way to retrieve the data from the memory chips.
Note: If you want the memory overwritten several times with zeroes and non-zero data, you should erase the data on the handheld using the Wipe Handheld feature.
Clearing Caches
Memory Cleaner clears various caches on the handheld including the temporary key store, content protection caches, address book caches, and the handheld clipboard. See the Additional Information section below for the complete list of cleared caches.
Installation
Memory Cleaner is installed and enabled with the installation of the S/MIME Support Package. Memory Cleaner is installed with BlackBerry Handheld Software version 4.0, but is not enabled until Content Protection is enabled.
Automatic Activation
Memory Cleaner is activated automatically when:
1. The handheld is synchronized with the desktop.
2. The user locks the handheld.
3. The handheld locks after a specified amount of idle time.
4. The user changes the time or time zone.
Manual Activation
Memory Cleaner can be activated manually by:
* Clicking the Memory Cleaner icon on the Home screen.
* In the Memory Cleaning screen, click the trackwheel, then Clean Now.
When the S/MIME Support Package is installed, you can configure Memory Cleaner from the Memory Cleaning screen, which is accessible by clicking Memory Cleaning on the Options screen.
The Memory Cleaning screen provides the following options:
Clean When Holstered - Run Memory Cleaner each time you insert the handheld into the holster. Default is Yes.
Clean When Idle - Run Memory Cleaner each time the handheld remains idle for the time set in the Idle Timeout field.
Idle Timeout - Indicate the amount of time the handheld must remain idle before Memory Cleaner is initiated.
Show Icon on Home Screen - Add a Memory Cleaner icon on the Home screen so the feature can be activated upon request01-09-09 01:32 PMLike 0
