The phone is probably on and the screen has just died on you. Happened to mine a few months ago. Had to get a replacement unit.
Try calling your number to see if it rings (or vibrates possible because that was the last sound profile you had on). See if you can answer with the hard answer button.
Regardless of the results, sounds like a replacement case to me. I would do a battery pull and leave the battery out for 5 minutes before making the final call.
